SEOUL, KOREA - Hyundai Engineering & Construction Corp. has secured an opportunity to move into the Colombian market by winning a project to improve the sewer system in a city in the South American country. Hyundai E&C, in partnership with Hyundai Engineering and Dongmyeong Engineering Consultants & Architecture, said on June 18 that it would complete the master plan to renovate the sewage system after taking on the project from the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute last year.
The Hyundai E&C consortium will build sewage treatment facilities and expand main pipe systems in three cities in Cauca Department in the southwest including the capital Popayan. The consortium has also proposed other follow-up projects such as sludge treatment facilities, wastewater recycling, and water flow rate-raising measures.
The projects are part of a Korea-Colombia joint environmental improvement program by which the Colombian government would award projects for the next several decades. A Hyundai E&C official said, "Once our consortium wins the sewer project this time, it would give us a huge opportunity to move into the $2.5-billion Colombian water-related market and other Latin American markets."
