SEOUL, KOREA - SK Hynix, which is competing with Micron Technology of the United States for the No. 2 spot in the semiconductor DRAM market, has overtaken its American rival in the areas of personal computer, server, digital home electronics and graphic DRAMs, excluding mobile DRAMs.
SK Hynix, which was overtaken by Micron in the fourth quarter of last year due to the fire accident at its Wuxi plant in China, retook the No. 2 position in the first quarter of this year and, thereafter, pushed up its market share throughout the entire spectrum of its business.
According to semiconductor market research firm IHS iSuppli, SK Hynix posted PC DRAM sales of $993 million in the first quarter of this year, with its market share estimated at 33.2 percent. This is higher than Micron’s 32.1 percent and Samsung Electronics’ 26.3 percent.
In the server DRAM area, Samsung occupied a share of 43.5 percent in the first quarter, followed by SK Hynix with 34.1 percent and Micron with 21.0 percent. Even in the digital home electronics DRAM area, Samsung kept its top spot with a share of 32.5 percent, followed by SK Hynix with 23.8 percent and Micron with 13.1 percent.
