SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung SDI envisions a massive increase in the supply of batteries to BMW group.The two parties signed an agreement on July 14 at the BMW Driving Center in Yeongjong Island in Incheon, Korea, to strengthen their cooperation in the electric vehicle battery business, as well as to expand battery supplies.
Under the terms of the agreement, Samsung SDI will expand its supply of battery cells to BMW group on a mid- and long-term basis, along with the increase in demand for electric vehicles. The scale of supply will likely to reach several trillion own.
The two parties also agreed to jointly develop next-generation materials-related technologies and promote business cooperation in the global marketplace. Over the next several years, Samsung SDI will supply battery cells not only for BMW group’s current models such as i3 and i8 but for its new hybrid models.
Samsung SDI formed a business tie-up with BMW group in 2009 and, thereafter, has supplied lithium-ion batteries for BMW i3 and i8.
