SEOUL, KOREA - Amid slowing demand for smartphones and tablets, the sales of wristwatch-type smart device Smart Watch are expanding, emerging as a new growth engine for the IT industry.
According to market research firm DisplaySearch, global smartwatch shipments will likely to reach 8.85 million units this year and 32.57 million units next year.
Global smartwatch shipments are forecast to grow to 45.86 million units in 2018, 58.58 million units in 2019, 65.41 million units in 2020 and 69.29 million units in 2021 after stagnating at 32.93 million units in 2016 and 28.47 million units in 2017.
In other words, global smartwatch shipments will likely to grow 34 percent per year.The smartwatch market opened when Samsung Electronics launched Galaxy Gear in September 2013.Samsung Electronics is leading the smartwatch market by releasing a string of follow-up models, including Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit in early this year.
