SEOUL, KOREA – In the first quarter of this year, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Korea climbed 45% year-on-year, as huge investments in real estate and brisk M&As offset a rise in the won and geographically risks such as North Korea’s attempts to launch a missile.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), FDI in Korea reported in the first quarter zoomed up 44.7% year-on-year to USD 3.39 billion, buoyed up mainly by investments in real estate in the Seoul metropolitan areas and regional commercial complexes, scaled-up investments by foreign-invested companies and foreign investors’ acquisition of Korean firms.
By sector, FDI in services surged a whopping 169% year-on-year to USD 2.25 billion while FDI in manufacturing shrank 23% to USD 1.14 billion. By nation, FDI from the US grew at the fast pace. It upsurged nearly 300% year-on-year while FDI from Japan, the EU and Chinese-speaking economies went down 20- 30%.
The outlook for the remainder of this year is somewhat gloomy, slowing down Korea’s economic growth.

1분기 외국인직접투자, 전년 동기 대비 45% 증가
올 1분기 외국인직접투자(FDI)가 전년 동기대비 45% 증가했다. 원화가치 상승과 지정학적 리스크 등 투자 위축 요인이 있었지만 대규모 부동산과 기업 인수 투자가 이어져 호조세를 보였다.
11일 산업통상자원부에 따르면 1분기 FDI 신고 금액은 33억9000만달러로 지난해 같은 기간에 비해 44.7% 늘어났다. 수도권 부동산과 지역 상업단지 투자를 비롯해 외투기업의 대규모 증액 투자, 재무적 투자자의 국내 중견 기업 인수 진행 등이 투자액 증가를 견인했다.
북한 미사일 발사 등 지정학적 리스크의 영향은 우려했던 것보다는 제한적이었다. 이미 외국인 투자 의사결정 시 지정학적 리스크가 반영됐다는 분석이다.
업종별로는 서비스업 투자가 22억5000만달러로 전년 대비 169% 크게 증가했다. 제조업 투자는 11억4000만달러로 23% 감소했다. 국가별로는 미국 측의 투자 증가세가 컸다. 미국의 투자는 지난해에 비해 300% 가까이 올랐다. 반면 일본, EU, 중화권 투자는 20~30%씩 감소했다.
올해 남은 기간 외국인 투자 유치 전망은 다소 부정적이다. 우리 경제 성장률이 둔화하는 탓이다.
정부는 이어질 지정학적 리스크를 지속적으로 모니터링하며 전략적 투자 유치 활동을 전개할 방침이다. 국내 경제 기여도를 기준으로 투자유치 대상 100대 기업을 선정하고, 주요 투자자 국가를 상대로 정부 차원의 투자설명회를 개최할 계획이다.
