SEOUL, KOREA – Korea has posted a trade surplus of over USD 20 billion for eight straight quarters. Korea’s materials and parts industry surpassed the USD 90 billion mark in trade surplus for the first time last year and it is expected to exceed the USD 90 billion threshold this year again.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), exports of materials and parts gained 5.2% year-on-year to USD 63.6 billion in the first quarter of this year while imports edged up 1.2% to USD 40.4 billion. Accordingly, Korea has notched up a trade surplus of USD 23.2 billion, breaking the USD 20 billion mark for eight consecutive quarters.
Growth (5.2%) in exports of materials and parts far outpaced the average growth pace of 0.5% for the entire industry. Though exports of materials shed 3.8%, those of parts jumped 10.3%.
By sector, the rebound in the exports has been led by electronics parts (13.1%), electric machinery parts (15.4%) and transport machinery parts (6.1%).
Korea’s dependence on Japanese imports, which held at over 27% in 2005, slid to 23% in 2012 and to 21.5% in the first quarter of this year. Meanwhile, the share of Korea’s exports to China in Korea’s total exports has continued to decelerate from 36.3% in 2010 to 33.4% in the first quarter of this year.

소재부품 무역흑자 8분기 연속 200달러 상회
우리나라 소재부품 무역흑자가 8분기 연속 200억달러를 웃돌았다. 사상 처음 무역흑자 900억달러를 넘어섰던 지난해에 이어 2년 연속 900억달러 돌파가 기대된다.
산업통상자원부는 1분기 소재부품 수출이 전년 동기 대비 5.2% 늘어난 636억달러, 수입은 1.2% 증가한 404억달러를 기록했다고 11일 밝혔다. 무역수지는 232억달러로 8분기째 200억달러를 넘었다.
소재부품 수출 증가율(5.2%)은 전 산업 평균(0.5%)을 크게 상회했다. 소재 수출은 3.8% 감소했지만 부품 수출이 10.3% 증가했다.
업종별로는 전자부품(13.1%), 전기기계부품(15.4%), 수송기계부품(6.1%) 등이 수출 회복을 주도했다.
지역별로는 대 일본 수입 의존도와 대 중국 수출 집중도가 완화돼 교역구조가 개선되는 양상이다.
대 일본 수입 의존도는 2005년 27%를 웃돌았으나 지난해 23%로 낮아진데 이어 올 1분기 21.5%까지 떨어졌다. 대 중국 수출 집중도는 △2010년 36.3% △2011년 34.5% △2012년 34.1% △2013년 1분기 33.4% 등으로 낮아졌다.
자원부국인 중동과의 교역은 플랜트 설비 확충에 힘입어 비금속광물을 제외한 대부분 업종에서 무역수지 흑자를 지속했다.
산업부는 올해 2년 연속 소재부품 무역흑자 900억달러를 돌파할 것으로 예상했다. 다만 해외 시장에서 엔저•원고에 따른 중국, 일본과 경쟁 심화가 우려돼 핵심 소재부품 개발과 맞춤형 마케팅 지원을 강화할 계획이다.
