Kia Motors’ GwangjuPlant Workers to Stage Partial Strike on August 28

SEOUL, KOREA - The labor union of Kia Motors decided to launch a partial strike on August 28, following the one staged on August 22, citing the not-yet-settled collective agreements as a reason.

Under the decision made by Kia Motors’ labor union, the first and second shift workers at Kia Motors’ Gwangju factory will stage a partial strike for six hours each on August 28.

The first shift workers work from 7:00 am to 3:40pm, while the secondshift workers from 3:40pm to 1:40am.The workers at Kia Motors’ Gwangjuplant will also plan to refuse to work on weekends until the collective agreement is settled.

On August 22, the unionized members of the Gwangju factory staged a partial strike two hours each for the first and secondshift.

Kia Motors’ union is now engaged in wage negotiations with the management, demanding to include the regular bonus in ordinary wages, to implement an eight-hour work shift scheme, to increase basic wage by 159,000 won and to give 30 percent of net profits as performance bonuses to workers.
