SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung retook Apple as its client again, with DRAM chips reemerging as Samsung’s another cash cow.

According to industry sources on August 26, Samsung Electronics is set to supply 20-nm DRAMs for Apple’s iPhone 6.Previously, Samsung couldn’t supply its DRAMs for Apple’s iPhone 5 and 5S as its business relations with Apple worsened due to patent disputes.

Key factors behind the resumption of Samsung’s DRAM supply for Apple include Samsung’s second-to-non technologies.

Among the world’s top-three DRAM makers, consisting of Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, Samsung is the only one which can make 20-25-nm class DRAMs. For Samsung, the share of 20-25-nm class models in its total DRAM output is estimated at 18 percent, far higher than SK Hynix’s 7 percent and Micron’s 2 percent.
