SEOUL, KOREA – The Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) is set to foster the 3D printing industry, which has been emerging as one of the most promising high value added industries.
On Thursday, officials from the MKE paid a visit to Carima (a Korean producer of 3D printers) in Yeomchang-dong, Seoul. 3D printing refers to a process of making a 3D solid object of virtually any shape from a digital model. Since it can be widely applicable, it is regarded as one of the most promising high value added industries for the future.
Though the 3D printing market is still in its infancy at the moment, it is projected to reach USD 6.1 billion by 2019. The US, China and Japan have already seen their governments and private sectors briskly making efforts to soup up their 3D printing industries.
Having succeeded in domestically developing 3D printing technology, Carima, one of Korea’s SMEs, has been exporting its 3D printers to nearly 20 nations around the globe. Its excellence in 3D printing technology was recognized first by overseas markets.
MKE officials sat down with the CEO of Carima to learn about current 3D printing industry trends and difficulties and then they headed for Carima’s R&D facilities.

지식경제부가 유망 고부가가치 산업으로 떠오른 3차원(D) 프린팅 산업 육성에 힘을 모은다.
지경부 성장동력실은 7일 오전 서울 염창동 소재 3D 프린팅업체 캐리마(대표 이병극)를 방문, 산업 응용과 육성 가능 성을 타진했다. 3D 프린팅은 디지털 디자인 데이터로 3차원 물체를 만들어내는 기술이다. 응용 범위가 넓어 미래 고부가가치 산업으로 꼽힌다.
지금은 초기 단계지만 오는 2019년 세계 시장 규모가 61억달러에 이를 전망이다. 부가가치를 더하면 갑절이 넘는 133억달러로 추정된다. 미국•중국•일본 등은 이미 정부와 민간 차원에서 산업 활성화 노력이 활발하다.
지경부가 국내 3D 프린팅 산업 현황을 파악하고자 찾은 캐리마는 국산화에 성공해 해외 20여개국에 수출하는 중소기업이다. 국내보다 해외에서 먼저 인정받았다.
지경부 성장동력실 관계자들은 이날 이병극 캐리마 사장으로부터 3D 프린팅 산업 동향과 고충을 청취한 후 연구개발(R&D) 시설을 둘러봤다.
지경부 산업육성 업무를 총괄하는 김재홍 성장동력실장을 비롯해 전자산업과, 나노융합팀 담당자가 현장을 찾았다. 전자부품연구원, 3D융합산업협회 관계자도 자리를 함께 했다.
이병극 사장은 3D 프린팅 산업 현황과 전망을 소개하고 국가 차원의 R&D 투자 지원을 건의했다. 김재홍 실장은 산업계 요구 사항을 확인하고 적극적으로 검토하겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.
함께 캐리마를 찾은 서기웅 지경부 전자산업과장은 “최근 주목받는 3D 프린팅 기술과 산업의 이해도를 높이기 위한 방문이었다”며 “향후 3D 프린팅 산업 육성 정책 수립 시 반영하겠다”고 말했다.
