SEOUL, KOREA – Amazon.com Inc. has announced its acquisition of the color display unit, Liquavista NV from Samsung Electronics for an undisclosed sum. Liquavista, which had been purchased by Samsung Electronics in 2011, is a developer of e-ink color display technology for e-readers.
In an emailed statement, Amazon said, "We are always looking for new technologies we may be able to incorporate into our products over the long term. The Liquavista team shares our passion for invention and is creating exciting new technologies with a lot of potential. It's still early days, but we're excited about the possibilities and we look forward to working with Liquavista to develop these displays.”
Amazon’s acquisition of Liquavista from Samsung Electronics seems designed to reinforce the competitiveness of its e-book reader Kindle. Though this acquisition, Amazon may intend to bring full color e-ink to its line of Kindle tablets.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is likely to withdraw from the e-book reader market.

아마존, 삼성의 e북 디스플레이 업체 `리쿠아비스타` 인수
아마존이 삼성의 전자책 디스플레이 업체 `리쿠아비스타(Liquavista)` 인수를 마무리했다고 14일 벤처비트가 보도했다. 리쿠아비스타는 삼성전자가 2011년 인수한 전자잉크(e-ink) 컬러 디스플레이 개발사다. 정확한 인수 조건은 공개되지 않았다.
아마존은 이메일 성명에서 “우리는 언제나 기존 제품과 시너지 효과를 낼 수 있는 새로운 기술을 찾아왔다”며 “리쿠아비스타는 놀라운 기술은 물론 많은 성장 가능성을 가진 팀으로 아마존과 함께 디스플레이 기술 개발에 나설 것”이라고 밝혔다.
리쿠아비스타 인수는 전자책 단말기 `킨들`의 경쟁력 강화를 위해서다. 저가 스마트패드 `킨들 파이어`가 큰 성공을 거두고 있지만 전자책 단말기 킨들 역시 아마존에겐 여전히 의미 있는 제품이다.
흑백 화면뿐인 킨들 제품에 리쿠아비스타 기술을 적용해 생생한 컬러 화면을 제공할 수 있다. e북 콘텐츠를 일반 흑백 서적에서 화려한 컬러를 가진 잡지와 신문 등으로 다양화 할 수 있다는 점에서 아마존이 최근 강조하고 있는 콘텐츠 플랫폼 확대 전략과도 일맥상통한다.
삼성전자는 리쿠아비스타 매각으로 전자책 단말기 시장에서 손을 땔 것으로 보인다. 별도 전자책 단말기를 만드는 대신 갤럭시 시리즈를 활용해 충분히 콘텐츠를 제공할 수 있다.
