International Passenger Traffic Hit Monthly High in April

Friday, May 24th, 2013

SEOUL, KOREA - The number of passengers using international flights reached 3.87 million in April 2013, up 2.7 percent from a year ago, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation. This represents the highest April result ever in the history of Korea.

Key factors behind the growth include an increase in the number of Chinese tourists during Chinese holiday seasons, plus an increase in domestic demand for overseas trips. The number of passengers using domestic flights grew by 0.1 percent to 2.01 million compared to a year ago. This is the first positive growth since August 2012.

The total number of international and domestic flight passengers stood at 5.89 million, up 1.8 percent from 5.79 million a year ago.

The share of Korean airlines, including Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, in international passenger traffic to and from Korea stood at 66 percent. The share of low-cost carriers grew by 1.9 percentage points to 9 percent.
