SEOUL, KOREA – Apple is said to strike a foundry partnership with Intel, which has been keen to foster its foundry business (a foundry is a company that lets other chip makers use its semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs)). Such a move is interpreted as Apple’s strategy to diversify its parts supply lines away from Samsung.
On Wednesday, Taiwan’s Digi Times reported that Apple was trying to source 10% of its next-generation A7 AP (application processors) from Intel.
Having signed a foundry agreement with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Apple seems set to reach out to Intel.
Apple has thus far placed orders for the main applications processors (AP) in the iPhone and iPad mainly with Samsung. However, its heated rivalry with the Korean electronics giant, coupled with the Apple-Samsung patent war, has sped up Apple’s departure form Samsung.
Digi Times predicted that Samsung will receive 50% of Apple’s A7 APs foundry deals, TSMC 40% and Intel 10%. Yet, Digi Times analyzed that since Samsung is able to offset a drop in orders from Apple with its own business expansion, Samsung will suffer a limited impact.

애플, 삼성 의존도 낮추려고 이렇게까지
애플이 최근 반도체 파운드리(수탁생산) 사업을 본격화하고 있는 인텔과도 제휴에 나설 것으로 알려졌다. 삼성전자에 대한 의존도를 낮추고 핵심 부품 공급선을 다각화하는 과정의 하나로 풀이된다.
대만 디지타임스는 기관투자가 등 소식통을 인용해 애플이 차세대 A7 애플리케이션 프로세서(AP) 물량의 10%를 인텔에서 공급받는 방안을 추진하고 있다고 13일 보도했다.
손을 잡기로 한 TSMC에 이어 인텔까지 그 폭을 넓힐 것이라는 전망이다.
AP는 아이폰, 아이패드 등 모바일 기기의 두뇌 역할을 하는 연산장치로 그동안은 애플이 직접 개발해 삼성전자에 수탁생산을 주로 맡겨왔다. 그러나 삼성과의 경쟁이 심화되고 특허분쟁까지 겹치면서 `탈(脫) 삼성` 움직임이 가시화하고 있다.
디지타임스는 애플의 A7 프로세서 공급을 삼성전자 50%, TSMC 40%, 인텔 10% 비율로 분담하게 될 것으로 전망했다. 매체는 그렇더라도 삼성전자는 해당 물량을 자사 제품군에 전환해 사용할 수 있기 때문에 영향은 제한적일 것으로 분석했다.
