SEOUL, KOREA – South Korean President Park Geun-hye ranked 11th on Forbes’ list of the world’s 100 most powerful women this year. It is the first time for President Park to make Forbes’ annual list and she is also the only Korean on the roster.
Forbes introduced President Park as South Korea’s first female president who was elected with Korea’s highest turnout rate in 15 years.
“This is her second term in the presidential office. Her father, Park Chung-hee, was president for 18 years, and at age 22 she became de facto first lady after her mother was killed by a bullet intended for her husband,” Forbes said.
Park presides over the world’s 15th-largest GDP at USD 1.15 trillion but its export economy is being challenged by China and Japan as well as international anxiety over North Korean brinksmanship on the Korean Peninsula, it said. North Korea has blamed her “venomous swish of skirt” for the tensions between the two countries, Forbes added.
The top spot was taken by German Chancellor Angela Merkel who has continued to top the list since 2006 except for 2010 when US First Lady Michelle Obama finished first. She was followed by Brazil’s President Dilma Rouseff, Melinda Gates, who co-chairs the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Michelle Obama and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

박대통령, 포브스 선정 `영향력 있는 여성` 11위
박근혜 대통령이 포브스가 선정한 `세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 여성 100인` 11위에 올랐다. 박 대통령이 순위에 포함된 사례는 이번이 처음이다. 또 한국인으로 유일하게 순위에 들었다.
포브스는 박 대통령을 최근 15년 동안 최고의 득표율로 당선된 한국의 여성 대통령이라고 소개했다. 포브스는 이어 “박 대통령은 두 번째로 청와대에 입성하는 것”이라며 “아버지 박정희 전 대통령이 18년간 대통령직을 수행할 당시 어머니가 암살된 후 22세의 나이로 사실상 퍼스트레이디 역할을 대신했다”고 전했다.
박 대통령은 현재 국내총생산(GDP) 규모 1조1500억달러인 경제대국의 대통령이지만 한국 특유의 수출형 경제가 중국과 일본의 도전을 받고 있을 뿐 아니라 북한의 벼랑 끝 전술로 난제에 직면했다고 분석했다. 특히 북한이 박 대통령을 `독기어린 치맛바람`이라고 비난하고 있어 국제적인 우려를 낳고 있다는 설명이다.
1위는 독일의 앙겔라 메르켈 총리가 차지했다. 메르켈 총리는 지난 2010년 버락 오바마 미국 대통령의 부인인 미셸 오바마 여사에게 1위 자리를 한 차례 내준 것을 제외하고는 지난 2006년부터 줄곧 1위를 지켜왔다. 지우마 호세프 브라질 대통령, 멜린다 게이츠 빌&멜린다 게이츠 재단 공동대표, 미셸 오바마, 힐러리 클린턴 전 미국 국무장관이 뒤를 이었다.
페이스북 최고운영책임자(COO) 셰릴 샌드버그, 크리스틴 라가르드 국제통화기금(IMF) 총재, 재닛 나폴리타노 미국 국토안보부 장관, 소니아 간디 인도 국민의회당 당수, 인드라 누이 펩시코 회장 등이 10위권에 포진했다.
