SEOUL, KOREA – Samsung Electronics recouped the No.1 position in global mobile phone sales in the first quarter of this year.
According to Strategy Analytics (SA), Samsung ranked first in first-quarter global mobile phone sales with USD 23.62 billion, up USD 952 million from the fourth quarter of 2012.
Apple, which rose to the top spot with USD 30.66 billion in the fourth quarter of last year, slid to the second place in Q1 of this year, shedding USD 7.7 billion quarter-on-quarter. The sales difference between Apple and Samsung Electronics is USD 666 million.
Samsung overtook Apple in a quarter thanks to growth in sales of Samsung LTE smartphones.
The third spot was taken by Nokia with USD 3.64 billion, followed by LG Electronics with USD 2.95 billion.
The global mobile phone market gained 11% y-o-y. SA analyzed that growth in the number of 3G mobile phones and LTE smartphones pushed up mobile phone manufacturers’ sales.

삼성전자 1분기 휴대폰 매출 세계 1위 탈환
미국의 시장조사업체 스트래티지애널리틱스(SA)는 올해 1분기 세계 휴대전화 매출액 집계 결과, 삼성전자가 236억2100만달러(약 26조5100억원)로 조사 대상 휴대전화 제조사 가운데 1위를 차지했다고 28일 밝혔다. 이는 직전 분기인 지난해 4분기와 견줘 9억5200만달러 늘어난 수치다.
지난해 4분기에 306억6000만달러로 삼성을 꺾고 1위 자리에 올랐던 애플은 1분기만에 77억500만달러가 줄어들어 다시 2위로 내려앉았다. 양사의 매출액 격차는 6억6600만달러였다.
삼성전자가 1분기만에 애플을 꺾은 요인으로 4분기에 높은 판매량을 보인 아이폰5의 영향력이 줄고 삼성의 다른 롱텀에벌루션(LTE) 스마트폰의 판매가 늘어났기 때문으로 풀이된다.
3위는 36억3700만달러를 기록한 노키아가 차지했고 LG전자는 29억4900만달러로 4위에 올랐다.
휴대전화 시장 전체 규모는 지난해보다 11% 상승했다. SA는 고가 3세대(3G) 휴대폰과 롱텀에벌루션(LTE) 단말기가 늘면서 제조사 매출액이 늘었다고 분석했다.
