SEOUL, KOREA - SK Engineering & Construction said on May 29 it has been awarded a construction project in Qatar. The company won the project commissioned by Qatari Rail, the project owner, jointly with Impregilo (Italy) and Galfar Engineering (Oman). Of the US$2-billion project, SK E&C will take a 41.25-percent share ($825 million) while the remaining 58.75 percent is split by Impregilo (41.25%) and Galfar (17.50%).
The contract, for TBM excavation of 13.1 kilometers of twin running tunnels on the Red Line North of the new metro system between Msheireb in downtown Doha and Al Khor North, is the first of four major tunnel construction packages that comprise Phase 1 of the project.
Red Line North also comprises a further 42.6 km of elevated and at-grade structures, which will be awarded in a later construction contract round, for a total completed length of 55.7 km. Metro line needs to be completed within the city center and to the new stadiums that are being built in Doha in advance of Qatar hosting the 2022 Soccer World Cup.
