Domestic Car Sales Down 2% in May

SEOUL, KOREA - Korea's five major carmakers saw their domestic sales down slightly in May 2013. Excluding Ssangyong Motor, the remaining four carmakers suffered a negative growth, in contrast to the positive growth of the import car market.

According to the automobile industry on June 3, the combined domestic sales of Korea's five major carmakers totaled 119,124 units in May 2013, down 2 percent from 121,585 units a year ago.

By company, Hyundai Motor saw its domestic sales fall by 0.2 percent to 57,942, while Kia Motors suffered a 3.1 percent decline to 39,500. GM Korea suffered the biggest drop of 9.2 percent to 11,810 units, while Renault Samsung reported a 1.4 percent decline to 4,602. In contrast, Ssangyong Motor enjoyed a 3.0 percent growth to 5,270.

Ssangyong Motor pushed up its domestic sales thanks to the growing popularity of its Korando C and Rexton models. Ssangyong Motor's domestic sales continued an upward trend for five straight months.
