SEOUL, KOREA – According to the recent Ericsson Mobility Report, the number of worldwide smartphone users, which stood at 1.2 billion last year, will hit 4.5 billion in 2018.
Worldwide sales of smartphones, which accounted for 40% of the world’s total mobile phone sales last year, neared 50% in the first quarter of this year. As smartphones are on track to become mainstream, the number of wireless Internet service users has also risen. The number of wireless Internet subscribers worldwide ascended 45% y-o-y to 1.7 billion in the first quarter of this year.
Growth in data traffic and volume is also rapid. Data traffic doubled y-o-y and gained 19% q-o-q in the first quarter. The report predicts that mobile data traffic would surge 12 fold by 2018, mainly driven by an uptick in network speeds. The number of new LTE subscribers reached 20 million in the first quarter. The report estimates that there will be 1 billion LTE subscribers by 2017.

스마트폰 사용자 5년 내 45억명 돌파•••데이터 트래픽 12배 늘 듯
4일 기가옴은 에릭슨이 발표한 `모빌리티 보고서`를 인용해 지난해 12억명이었던 세계 스마트폰 사용자가 2018년에 45억명에 이를 것이라고 보도했다.
스마트폰 판매량은 지난해까지 전체 휴대폰의 40%를 차지했지만 올해 1분기 50%에 육박했다. 스마트폰이 대세로 자리 잡으면서 무선인터넷 사용자도 증가한다. 올해 1분기 기준 세계 무선인터넷 가입자는 17억명으로 전년 동기 대비 45%나 늘어났다.
데이터 트래픽과 사용량 증가 속도도 빠르다. 1분기 데이터 트래픽 규모는 1년 전보다 두 배, 직전 분기보다 19% 늘었다. 보고서는 모바일 데이터 트래픽이 2018년까지 12배 증가할 것으로 내다봤다.
네트워크 속도 증가가 트래픽 급증의 요인이라는 분석이다. 지난 1분기 신규 LTE 가입자는 2000만명에 달했다. 2017년에는 10억명을 돌파할 전망이다. 특히 북미 지역에서 미국을 필두로 LET 가입자 증가세가 두드러진다. 5년 내 이 지역의 스마트폰 가입자 70%가 LTE를 사용할 것으로 보인다.
웹서핑과 소셜 네트워킹 사용에 따른 트래픽도 점차 증가해 2018년에는 전체 모바일 데이터 트래픽의 20%를 차지한다. 반면 음성 통화 사용은 정체 상태다. 1분기 음성통화 트래픽은 지난해 같은 기간보다 4% 증가에 그쳤다.
에릭슨 측은 “네트워크 성능은 가입자를 늘리고 고객 충성도를 높이는 주요 요인”이라며 “무서 인터넷 속도를 높이려는 통신사 간 경쟁이 더욱 치열해질 것”이라고 전했다.
