SEOUL, KOREA- LG Electronics is set to re-enter the tablet computer market with its 8.3-inch G Pad. The company plans to make forays into the tablet PC market on the back of its premium G brand.
LG’s new challenge, however, will likely to face tough competition, given that Samsung Electronics and Apple are vying fiercely for the No. 1 spot in the global tablet PC market, plus new entry by Chinese companies.
LG Electronics announced on September 9 that it will release the G Pad in 30 countries by the end of this year. The G Pad will be released as a Wi-Fi-only model, starting from Korea within next month toward North America, Europe, and Latin America on a step-by-step basis.
LG Electronics had released its first tablet PC in 2011 when it unveiled the Optimus Pad. The Optimus Pad was released only in a handful of countries, including the United States, with its sales remaining negligible. LG added 4G function to the Optimus Pad and re-launched the upgraded model in Korea in January 2012. This attempt, however, failed to draw much attention from local consumers.
