SEOUL, KOREA- Samsung Electronics started using SK Hynix’s mobile DRAMs for its Galaxy smartphones from this month. This is the first time for Samsung and SK Hynix, which ranks No. 1 and No. 2 in memory chip market respectively, to make mobile DRAM transactions.
A Samsung official said, “We are using SK Hynix DRAMs for some of our smartphones, but not for premium models like the Galaxy S4.”
Samsung Electronics had sounded out SK Hynix’s intention to supply its mobile DRAMs in March 2013. After months of reviewing, SK Hynix decided to start supplying from this month.
Key factors behind Samsung’s decision to procure mobile DRAMs from SK Hynix included its concern about a possible supply shortage along with recent hikes in the sales of smartphones.
