According to market research firm DisplaySearch, the share of flexible smartphones in the overall smartphone market which stood at a mere 0.2 percent last year, is forecast to shoot up to 12 percent in 2015 and 40 percent in 2018.
Another market research firm Allied Business Intelligence predicted that the annual growth rate of flexible displays would average at 22 percent in the wearable device market. In other words, flexible display demand would grow to more than 500 million units in 2018 from 300 million units in 2015 and less than 200 million units in 2013.
Against this backdrop, competition is flaring up among domestic display companies for the development of next-generation display products.
Samsung Display, for example, is targeting high-end smartphone and tablet markets. To get the upper hand in this market, Samsung Display is working on initiatives to expand display contrast ratio up to 2,000,000:1, as well as to improve color reproduction rate up to 100 percent.
